It is important that I begin by thanking Paul Belair and the outgoing Board of Governors for their dedication and commitment to the BCRSP in progressing our strategic goals. I am both grateful and excited to be taking on the role of BCRSP Chair. I realize that this role provides me with the privilege of connecting with our certificants, the public at large and other interested parties.
The BCRSP Governing Board represents such a great cross section of expertise, skills, and knowledge. With this diverse group of professionals, I look forward to advancing the BCRSP’s strategic initiatives. I am pleased to welcome our new governors; David Legge, Jeremy Mollet, and Cindy Schiewek and I offer congratulations on your election to the Board. Similarly, I congratulate our officers, Rebecca Chow, Vice Chair, David Larson, Treasurer and Natalie Carscadden, Secretary. Please find the full Governing Board list here.
At our recent Annual General Meeting (June 25, 2025), Paul Belair highlighted many of the achievements of the past 12 months from his Chair’s report. If you were not able to attend the AGM, you can find highlights in the BCRSP’s Annual Report.
One of the initiatives in 2024/25 that the Board has been focused on is the development of the BCRSP Competency Model that supports the technical aspects of the safety profession that are defined in the examination Blueprints. The BCRSP Competency Model has been developed to support interested parties in the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) field, specifically those associated with the Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST®) and Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP®) certification levels. The competency model was designed to align with BCRSP’s strategic direction and to support OHS professionals and technicians in their learning and career development. Furthermore, this will assist employers/human resources in hiring and performance management. In order to accomplish these goals, the competency model consists of a holistic mix of behavioural, technical, and leadership competencies, as well as sample job titles and tasks for CRSTs and CRSPs.

We think this is a great first step to help human resource professionals and employers enhance their understanding of the safety profession and the roles it can assume in an organization. We also welcome feedback on this publication. Your comments are most welcome and can be sent to the BCRSP office.
