In My Own Words - Sean Gaskin, CRSP

Why did you decide to pursue a CRSP Certification?

In my pursuit of success in my EH&S Professional career, it led me to pursue the CRSP certification.

I started out in the environmental field, went to the trades, and finally into HSE. I find it a rewarding career but also very competitive, so staying on the cutting edge is important.

It is not easy to obtain this designation - the challenge weeds out a lot of the people who are not serious about the profession. Having my own company, it is vital to have the CRSP designation to let clients know that I am a part of a professional group that will hold me to a certain level of professionalism. My insurance rates have been reduced since obtaining my designation as well.

How did you find out about the Certification?

Early on in my career, I was informed about the CRSP program during my entry level HSE training courses with the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA).

How long have you had your Certification and why do you still maintain it?

I recently obtained my certification in early 2019, and it immediately paid off with increased job offers. I will maintain my certification until I retire.

If you could give some advice to someone about why they should be a CRSP, what would you tell them?

Things that are worth having are not easy. Stay focused and do not get deterred if there are challenges in your pursuit of the CRSP designation. It took me a long time and a lot of dedication to obtain this certification. It was tempting to give up, but I persisted and it is paying off now.
