Why did you decide to pursue a BCRSP Certification?

Certification gains credibility. I wanted to establish early on in my career that I met the benchmark of what was required to be a CRSP. Being in a province with a large number of health and safety people, it was important to me to stand out from the competition. Your certification is your badge of excellence, and demonstrates the commitment you have to the profession.

How did you find out about the certification?

I found out about the CRSP certification through research and a few mentors who had their designation.

How long have you had your certification and why do you still maintain it?

I became a CRSP in 2014. I continue to maintain my certification because I think it’s the way of the future. I hope to eventually see Health and Safety certifications legislated with title and scope protection like other professions (Doctors, Nurses, Engineers, etc.). A standard of competence ensures we have the knowledge, judgement and skill to be professionals in our industry, which is important to me.

If you could give some advice to someone about why they should pursue certification with the BCRSP, what would you tell them?

Obtaining and maintaining a professional certification sets you apart from others in your industry. It gives you a competitive advantage when looking for work (especially during these unprecedented times), can potentially increase your earnings, and gives you the ability to expand your knowledge and skills. Having my CRSP has opened many doors for me - I am an advocate of professional certifications!
