Obtaining the CRSP designation has been an ongoing goal of mine since I entered the safety field. Starting off my career working in the mining industry as a Geological Technician, I quickly recognized that safety was vastly evolving. Moving a few years ahead, I noticed more organizations advertising for safety professionals; to implement safety management programs, ensure compliance with legislation and adhere to client specific requirements. This to me was an opportunity to advance my career in a challenging industry that will require professionals moving forward. I’ve worked in the Mining, Oil and Gas, Pipeline and Construction industry till this date. The CRSP designation has provided me the opportunity to work in diverse industries and more to come.
I have known about the CRSP designation prior to obtaining my Occupational Health and Safety Practitioner Certificate back in early 2011. However, it was when I first noticed the “C.R.S.P” in the email signature of the Safety Advisor at the mine site I worked at. In addition, I submitted supporting safety documents directly to his office, often seeing his certificate at the corner of my eye. I asked him what the designation was for and he quickly responded, “It’s the best of the best safety designation you can achieve. You should look into safety; all companies need safety nowadays.” I was then intrigued, researching technical schools to see what was available. Saskatchewan Polytechnic was my first choice.
The Program Head at Saskatchewan Polytechnic always versed our class on the designation being the benchmark for safety professionals. This created a short-term goal for me to achieve. Work, study, sleep was the story of my life for a solid eight months prior to sitting for the exam. It has been two and a half years since I achieved my CRSP designation and continue to maintain to ensure I stay well versed in all aspects of the safety industry.
