In My Own Words - Bufford Ang, CRSP

I decided to pursue the BCRSP certification as it is in my opinion that it is the most respected safety certification to have globally. There are other safety professional certifications available (e.g., CSP, CMIOSH, NEBOSH), but in my view the CRSP certification is the most reputable and at the same time the most underrated safety certification out there. Candidates undergo a rigorous selection process with their educational background and experience (i.e., selected applicants go through an interview). Once you pass this phase, then you undergo the dreaded written examination which is nerve wracking due to the limited time allotted. The depth and comprehensiveness of the written exam questions (from theoretical concepts to practical, real life scenarios) really test the safety competencies gained by the examinee, as well as what is expected of a safety professional in ANY workplace, not only in Canada.  Add to this the length and level of difficulty of most questions in the CRSP written examination, as well as the high cutoff score required to pass.

I found out about the certification from two colleagues of mine who are CRSP certified, and they encouraged me to challenge the examination as it is the gold standard of safety certification. I initially took the CRSP exam in 2018, but unfortunately did not make it the first time due to lack of study preparation. But I persisted, dusted myself off and tried again. With my perseverance and tenacity, I was able to successfully pass the CRSP examination in 2020. I plan to maintain it as long as I am working in the safety field, as it is a sign of my high level of competence in the practice of occupational safety.

Maintaining the CRSP certification is your ‘foot at the door’ when applying for safety management-related job postings. It is THE safety credential that employers (both Canada and globally) are looking for to denote competency of a safety professional, and that particular individual is indeed committed to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace for all employees.

I know that the CRSP examination can be very daunting and challenging, but with sheer persistence, focus, LOTS of studying, practice and determination, YOU will make it. I encourage anyone who is serious and committed to practice the art and science of occupational safety to pursue the CRSP certification, because it will open a lot of doors for you. It is a rewarding career and it makes you feel accomplished at the end of the day that YOU made a significant impact in ensuring the safety and health of your colleagues at work.
