What is the most misunderstood aspect of your job? The still commonly held but mistaken belief that safety practitioners and professionals are ‘cops’ who are looking to catch people in the act of doing the wrong thing. |
What does a typical day look like for you? I spend the majority of my day managing people. I am excited to work with many CRSP’s in this capacity through both our staff and contractor pools. |
Why did you chose this field? I am a teacher by trade. Education and Training are integral parts of any successful Safety Culture—and my HSE career began through a company’s need for broader education internally. In order to provide this training, I needed to first educate myself in the field—and that educational journey of mine is ongoing and continues to thrive. |
What is the most gratifying part of being a safety professional? The passion of the HSE community, both the seasoned and the new professional, to continually improve working conditions continues to fuel my passion. |
Is there anything you’d like people to know about the field? We have chosen a collaborative undertaking. It is growing and strengthening as a result of the community members’ commitment to striving to protect all people at all worksites. At first glance, it appears to be a lofty goal—but nothing else will suffice. |
Best part of your day? I am inspired to give more every day, by seeing the proverbial ‘lights’ come on for people (whether they work specifically in HSE or not), when they accept safety as an inherent value, and recognize that HSE is an element of all we do for ourselves and others. We are in the infancy of this profession and watching it develop into a professional field with consistent standards, ethics and accountabilities stimulates my passion for this field! |
