MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO - September 5, 2025 - The Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP) is pleased to announce the publication of a Competency Model tool to support career development and role alignment.
The competency model was designed to align with BCRSP’s strategic direction, to support OHS professionals and technicians in their learning and career development, and to assist employers/human resources in hiring and performance management. To accomplish these goals, the competency model consists of a holistic mix of behavioural, technical, and leadership competencies, as well as sample job titles and tasks for CRSTs and CRSPs.
The content reflects evidence-based approaches and emerging trends in the OHS field and was informed by research into existing competency models and consultation with subject matter experts.
This competency model is designed to complement, rather than replace, the existing CRSP® and CRST® examination blueprint competencies. While the blueprints primarily emphasize technical knowledge and requirements, this model distinguishes itself by incorporating “soft skills” and behaviours alongside technical expertise.
These are some of the ways in which this competency model can be used:
- For Self-Assessment: Use the competency descriptions and behavioral indicators to evaluate your current skills and identify areas for improvement.
- For Career Development: Reference the competencies to set learning objectives or prepare for CRST or CRSP certification.
- For Role Alignment: Match the described competencies with organizational roles and responsibilities to ensure alignment.
- For Performance Management: Use the behavioural indicators to provide clear performance expectations and feedback.
- For Training and Curriculum Design: Develop targeted learning modules that address the specific competencies outlined for each certification level.
