At Capital Power Corporation, we are committed to ensuring the well-being and safety of our employees, and we are seeking a Senior Advisor, Health & Safety, who shares this commitment. In this role, you will be accountable for assisting operating units in the application and implementation of our Health, Safety & Environmental Management System. You will ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety legislation, internal policies, and reporting requirements.

You will contribute to our team by:

  • Acting as a subject matter expert to employees, supervisors and managers to interpret, implement and ensure consistent application of internal safety standards and compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Leading hazard assessments and documenting site-specific procedures to prevent health and safety incidents.
  • Supporting and guiding the implementation of the contractor prequalification and selection process for capital projects and outages.
  • Providing pre-outage and on-site support for all phases of planned and forced outages.
  • Identifying support needs, including programs/procedures, training requirements and outage/project contracted health and safety support.
  • Providing assistance and support with the development of health and safety improvement plans.
  • Supporting the on-going development of a proactive zero injury culture at all levels of the organization.
  • Attending and participating in various team meetings, safety meetings, outage planning meetings and kick off meetings.
  • Providing assistance and support to ensure successful implementation of Corporate Program and Planning initiatives.
  • Developing proactive, cost-effective solutions focused on health and safety processes at the operational level.
  • Pro-actively identifying emerging health and safety issues at the operational level and providing support on resolutions.
  • Actively participating in and providing guidance on the hazard assessment and control processes.
  • Reviewing the site emergency response plans and Hazard, Risk and Vulnerability Assessment Report (HRVA) and making recommendations for updates or improvements.
  • Supporting and responding to incidents in the workplace, completing the investigation process, and implementing the corrective/preventative action.
  • Actively participating in the workplace audit and inspection processes and the implementation of corrective actions to resolve issues identified.
  • Participating in the HSE Risk Profile Summary Report Reviews.
  • Providing health and safety advice, coaching expertise, guidance, leadership, and support to all levels of the organization.
  • Serving as the first point of contact and response for employee and contractor health and safety management.

What you will bring to the role:

Education:

  • Completed Occupational Health and Safety Degree, Diploma or CRSP (recognized safety designation such as NCSO or CHSC would be considered an asset).

Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years Health and Safety field experience – preference to field experience at operational power generational facilities and / or construction & maintenance.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Health & Safety policy, programs and Health and Safety Management Systems.
  • Comprehensive understanding of health and safety regulations and legislation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office applications.
  • The ability to demonstrate the application of risk assessment to company operations and activities.

Working Conditions:

  • Site based position, with moderate travel throughout Canada and the United States required.
  • Extensive travel in Ontario to support all Ontario sites.  Communication through various office technologies (Microsoft Lync/teleconference/online meetings). 
  • Potential for infrequent after hour calls as part of incident or emergency notification process.
  • Position may require working extended hours (beyond 40 hours / week) during planned maintenance outages/turnarounds.

Additional Details:

As this is a safety sensitive position, clearance of a pre-employment drug & alcohol test is required.
