Position Overview 

The Safety Consultant provides health and safety advisory services to a designated client and its contractors, supporting the planning and execution of maintenance-related activities. This role focuses on ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety requirements, conducting site inspections, reviewing contractor safety documentation, and supporting continuous improvement of safety programs. 

The Safety Consultant works collaboratively with client leadership, contractors, and workers to identify hazards, implement appropriate controls, and promote a proactive safety culture. 

Key Responsibilities 

Client Advisory & Safety Program Support 

  • Act as a trusted advisor and integrator of health and safety strategies aligned with the client’s mission, operational objectives, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support the implementation and ongoing improvement of the client’s occupational health and safety management system.
  • Review and validate client OHS management system requirements, including policies, procedures, training programs, and workplace inspections. 

Site Safety Inspections & Hazard Management 

  • Conduct worksite safety reviews of contractor maintenance activities.
  • Perform regular site inspections and document findings with photographic evidence, including date/time, contractors onsite, work activities, equipment used, general observations, deficiencies, and corrective actions.
  • Identify hazards and safety deficiencies, recommend corrective actions, track corrective actions to completion, and verify effectiveness of implemented measures.
  • Engage with workers, supervisors, and management to communicate hazards, required controls, and mitigation strategies. 

Contractor Safety Oversight 

  • Review and approve contractor work plans, applications, and project-specific hazard assessments to ensure appropriate controls and safe work practices are in place.
  • Verify contractor training records for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with required competencies.
  • Ensure contractors meet client and regulatory safety requirements before and during work activities. 

Training & Safety Culture Development 

  • Develop and deliver safety and technical training programs for contractors as required.
  • Provide training sessions on client safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Support safety awareness campaigns and initiatives that promote a strong and positive safety culture. 

Incident Investigation & Reporting 

  • Conduct incident analysis and investigations, preparing summary reports with recommendations to address root causes and improve safety performance.
  • Prepare monthly safety performance reports summarizing inspection findings, trends, recurring issues, and mitigation strategies.
  • Document consulting activities and provide updates to the client on safety performance and program effectiveness. 

 

Qualifications 

Education & Professional Credentials 

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field - required.
  • CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) or CHSC (Canadian Health and Safety Consultant) designation – required. 

Experience & Knowledge 

  • Strong knowledge of Federal and Provincial Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  • Experience conducting site inspections, incident investigations, and safety program implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced environment. 

Skills & Competencies 

  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with workers, contractors, supervisors, and senior leadership.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities related to hazard identification and risk mitigation.
  • Proficiency with technology, including shared drives, safety management systems, and electronic reporting tools. 

Additional Requirements 

  • Ability to obtain and maintain required security clearance.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to client sites as required.
