The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is located on the beautiful central east coast of Vancouver Island, incorporating the municipalities of Nanaimo, Lantzville, Parksville, and Qualicum Beach, and seven unincorporated electoral areas that lie between Cassidy to the south and Bowser to the north. About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, Employee Health, Safety and Wellness, the Occupational Health + Safety Specialist (OHS Specialist) is fully funded by and fully allocated to providing support to Wastewater Services and will have a close working relationship with and support of the Manager, Wastewater Services. The OHS Specialist is a safety professional who provides advice, support, and analysis to develop systems that achieve optimal control over hazards and exposures detrimental to people, equipment, materials, and the environment within Wastewater Services (WWS). Promoting sustainable business practice, the position will work to reduce and eliminate the risk of fatalities, injuries (physical and psychological), occupational illnesses, and property/ environmental damage.
Supporting all WWS facility locations, on site, this position is responsible for ensuring that (WWS) employees are engaged in their OHS statutory and corporate obligations so that a culture of continuous improvement grows and compliance at all levels of WWS is maintained. They lead the implementation, coordination, and review of safety measures, promote continuous improvement, and foster a strong safety culture.
This is an incredible opportunity for an experienced Health + Safety Specialist to develop and support safety management in collaboration with a strong municipal wastewater services department. The successful candidate will bring strong communication and relationship-building skills and a commitment to health and safety work practices. The preferred candidate will hold a CRSP certification and a post-secondary degree, with five (5) years experience leading Occupational Health and Safety programs, ideally working in infrastructure and industrial operations in a safety-sensitive unionized environment.
The salary range for this position is $99,416 - $ 114,082 annually and is supplemented by a competitive total compensation plan. Possession of a Class 5 Driver’s License is required.
