Health, Safety, and Environment Manager
The Canadian Light source Inc. (CLSI) is looking for a Manager for our Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team. The HSE department supports CLSI’s safety objectives and establishes policies, procedures and protocols for employee and public safety. We make safety paramount in our work and our research, and we welcome your application if you share this perspective.
Who we are
The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is a 3rd generation synchrotron light source and a national research facility located on the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light that is used to explore the laws of nature from the microscopic to the macroscopic dimensions and helps bolster innovation in many technical fields. Through its 22 beamlines, it serves national and international users working on everything from dinosaur skins to mine remediation and from cancer treatment to cutting edge electronics.
Our facility is centrally located on the beautiful grounds of the University of Saskatchewan within walking distance of Saskatoon’s riverbank trails and close to campus amenities such as fitness facilities, restaurants, museums, and galleries. Saskatoon is a livable and growing city with plenty of green space and walking paths, a thriving arts community, and a lively music scene. The city, as well as the provincial and regional parks within a driving distance, offer year-round options for outdoor activities and exploration.
What your responsibilities will include
- Effectively managing the HSE team to ensure the success of our group of safety professionals who support the resolution of health, safety and environmental matters, including radiation protection and control
- Establishing and implementing HSE programs and services for our employees, researchers, students, and visitors such as training programs, prevention programs, and the investigation of unusual occurrences
- Securing and maintaining compliance with all licenses issued by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and all other applicable federal, provincial and local acts and regulations
- Assuming the lead in representing the organization during inspections/audits by regulatory agencies and preparing presentations on the status of HSE and security as needed
Should you have the applicable background, you would also be appointed the Radiation Safety Officer for all CNSC licenses.
Some considerations for planning your work
Some travel, within Canada and potentially internationally, is expected.
You will also serve as an emergency contact for the facility and may be required to be on call to support our response to critical situations.
What you would bring
This role is right for you if you prioritize collaboratively working with other professionals to problem solve with respect to safety.
Qualifications
- A relevant undergraduate degree
- A minimum of 10 years of related experience
- Experience in a management role
Additional experience that would be considered an asset
A background in radiation safety is an asset.
Compensation: Salary will be based on the experience and background of the successful candidate.
A comprehensive benefits package, including supplemental health & dental, life insurance, pension plan, health spending account, and four weeks’ vacation is part of a competitive compensation package.
Should you be relocating to Saskatoon to take the job at CLS as part of your next career move, we also offer relocation assistance. Although housing prices in Saskatoon tend to be more reasonable as compared to other areas of Canada, we also provide a loan to support you with the purchase of a home.
To Apply: Please apply on www.lightsource.ca/careers with your cover letter and resume.
We will start reviewing applications in May 2026 and will continue reviewing applications until the position is filled. While all applicants are thanked for their interest, only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
