Position Status: One (1) Full Time (40 hrs/week), 1 Year Contract with Possibility of Extension

The Opportunity

The MNA is recruiting for a full-time, temporary Health and Safety Advisor based out of the Métis Nation of Alberta’s Provincial Head Office location in Edmonton. Dually reporting to the Director of Facilities and Building Operations and the Director of Human Resources, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading in the development, implementation, facilitation, and maintenance of Health and Safety (H&S) policies, processes, procedures, and training. The Health and Safety Advisor will provide guidance and recommendations based on Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) standards to support the organization’s goals and objectives related to health and safety in the workplace and will implement health and safety plans in collaboration with Human Resources and Facilities and Building Operations leadership.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development and implementation of the MNA’s Health and Safety Manual.
  • Ensure organizational compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, regulation, and code.
  • Pay an active and lead role on the Health and Safety Committee.
  • Create, revise, and provide recommendations and H&S policies and procedures.
  • Train the Health and Safety Committee to meet Occupational Health and Safety standards.
  • Ensure effective maintenance of emergency response procedures and facilitate regular drills and training.
  • Create a Hazard Control Assessment Procedure, including the creation of a monthly routine checklist and procedures for controlling hazards.
  • Perform Risk Assessment and train staff on identifying, managing, and mitigating risk.
  • Communicate with departments to assist in the creation of departmental Health and safety procedures as subparts of the general H&S Manual. 
  • Be the initial point of contact for any required investigations from H&S incidents.
  • Review H&S incidents, use strategic problem solving to mitigate risks, and evaluate re-occurring incidents.
  • Host regular H&S training and education sessions for staff on topics such as body mechanics, ergonomics, emergency response, incident actions, etc.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of OH&S monitoring programs, as required.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.

  • Exceptional knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation and compliance requirements  
  • Exceptional attention to detail. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.  
  • Proven track record of building collaborative partnerships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, including management, partners, and community.  
  • Exceptional strategic planning skills, including an ability to establish short- and long-term plans to meet key objectives of projects/initiatives.   
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to deal with a wide range of individuals and produce professional documents and presentations that target different audiences. 
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to strict confidentiality of sensitive information. High level of integrity, ethics, and professionalism.  
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to identify issues and implement creative and strategic solutions to overcome problems. 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.  
  • Flexible and adaptable with an ability to thrive in a dynamic and changing environment.  
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle tense and stressful situations.  
  • Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the MNA and Métis culture is an asset. 

 

Qualifications

  • A minimum of a degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field is required.
  • CRSP designation or CHSC certification is an asset.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in Occupational Health and Safety is required.

 

Other Requirements

  • Ability to work in office Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends, with notice.
  • Travel within Alberta is a requirement.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
