Summary
The Director, Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) is Atura Power’s senior authority on environmental and safety matters, accountable for shaping enterprise wide EHS strategy, governance, and regulatory risk management across both operating assets and the development portfolio.
This role establishes the organization’s EHS direction, defines standards and risk profile, and ensures consistent application from early stage development and permitting through construction, commissioning, and operations.
The Director provides EHS leadership for conventional generation and emerging technologies including battery energy storage systems, wind, and solar ensuring that evolving risks and regulatory requirements are identified early, assessed rigorously, and managed accordingly.
With enterprise-level accountability delivered through a lean direct reporting model, the Director influences and guides site based teams, project resources, and senior leadership. This role is the primary interface with environmental and safety regulators and provides expert advice on issues that may materially impact safety, environmental performance, regulatory standing, operational reliability, capital investment, and project viability.
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
EHS Strategy, Governance & Compliance
- Establish Atura Power’s EHS strategy, governance framework, standards, and performance expectations.
- Define EHS risk tolerances and ensure consistent application across operating plants and development projects.
- Advise executive and senior leadership on material EHS risks affecting regulatory standing, operations, growth decisions, and capital planning.
- Monitor emerging regulations, industry trends, and evolving expectations, adapting programs to remain modern, compliant, and forward‑looking.
- Oversee incident investigation processes to ensure root causes are identified, corrective actions implemented, and organizational learning embedded.
- Accountable for establishing EHS reporting and metrics, including providing updates to senior management and the Board of Directors as required.
Operating Asset Oversight
- Provide governance, technical guidance, and oversight to operations and plant leadership across Atura Power’s fleet.
- Drive continuous improvement in environmental compliance, safety performance, and incident prevention.
- Ensure consistent execution of EHS programs, standards, and reporting requirements.
- Oversee significant incidents and escalations, ensuring appropriate engagement, corrective action, and communication.
Development, Construction & Capital Projects
- Lead EHS input into site screening, environmental feasibility, permitting strategy, and regulatory engagement.
- Support diligence activities related to acquisitions, partnerships, and greenfield development.
- Provide EHS leadership throughout construction and commissioning, ensuring a smooth transition into operations.
- Advise on EHS-related go/no-go decisions that may influence schedule, cost, risk acceptance, or project viability.
Regulatory & External Engagement
- Serve as Atura Power’s primary senior interface with environmental and safety regulators.
- Lead engagement on complex, ambiguous, or precedent‑setting regulatory matters.
- Represent the company where regulatory requirements are evolving or not clearly defined.
- Support external stakeholder, community, and Indigenous engagement on matters related to EHS.
Emerging Technologies & Innovation
- Develop and refine EHS frameworks for non‑thermal assets including battery storage, solar, and wind.
- Address technology‑specific risks such as electrical hazards, energy storage safety, land use considerations, and environmental impacts.
- Stay abreast of emerging practices, regulatory trends, and advancements in safety and environmental management.
People Leadership & Culture
- Champion a strong safety culture and reinforce accountability at all levels of the organization.
- Lead, mentor, and develop EHS professionals, including matrixed plant and project support resources.
- Embed EHS considerations into planning processes, business decision‑making, and capital project execution.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field required.
- Professional certifications strongly preferred: CRSP, CHSC, CSP, EP(CEA) or equivalent.
Experience
- Minimum 10+ years of progressive EHS experience in power generation, energy infrastructure, industrial operations, or similarly regulated environments.
- Minimum 5+ years in a leadership capacity with enterprise or multi-site influence.
- Demonstrated experience with both operating asset oversight and development/construction environments.
- Experience working with regulators to resolve complex compliance and permitting matters.
- Experience with renewable technologies and/or energy storage is a strong asset.
Skills & Competencies
- Deep knowledge of Ontario EHS legislation and electricity sector standards.
- Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and relationship‑building skills.
- Proven ability to assess and communicate risk, influence decision‑making, and provide clear, pragmatic guidance.
- Ability to navigate regulatory uncertainty and advise on material risk acceptance at the enterprise level.
