What is the most misunderstood aspect of your job? The most misunderstood aspect of my job as a safety professional is the dynamic nature of the career itself. Some days I am focused on hazard assessments and risk tolerance; other days I am focused on ground disturbance requirements, incident investigation or injury management. There are times when I could be working in a remote location or in an urban setting, depending on the needs of the region or project. |

What does a typical day look like for you? In my current role I am primarily focused on Health and Safety Training and Development. I review legislated requirements and any updated internal standards on an ongoing basis, ensuring that safety training is accurate and targets the appropriate audience based on a formal learning needs assessment. In addition to this I participate in various committees that examine occupational health and safety and learning to ensure worker needs are being met. I often work closely with a communications advisor, developers and technical subject matter experts such as engineers and electricians to make certain that information –whether it is training or awareness- is reaching workers at the field level. |

Why did you chose this field? Knowledge is one of the most powerful tools that we can use to protect ourselves from hazards. I chose this field because it is one that is near to my heart. You see, my father suffered a serious workplace injury and I have seen the lasting impacts that it can have on a person and their family. I wanted to do something that would allow me to combine my passion for learning with my desire to help others, and a career in safety was the path I chose. |

What is the most gratifying part of being a safety professional who is certified as a CRSP? For me, the most gratifying part of being a CRSP is knowing that the work I do helps others get home safely to their loved ones. I have found that the process behind the certification aids in reinforcing my credibility as a safety professional. The opportunities to network with like-minded professionals have also been rewarding experiences stemming from becoming a CRSP. |

Is there anything you’d like people to know about the field? I would like people to know that if you have a passion for safety you will never be bored. There are many areas where you can focus your attention, a few of which I have already mentioned. |

Best part of your day? I work at an organization whose values- safety, integrity and respect- are very much in line with how I choose to live my life, so for me the best part of my day is getting to live my own personal values while helping to build a stronger safety culture within my organization. I truly enjoy promoting health and safety and being a part of the process that educates workers and helps prevent incidents. |
