Health and Safety Manager, Global Operations
Introduction
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Operations & Chief Operating Officer, this position oversees B2Gold’s corporate occupational health and safety function, as well as providing expertise and guidance to all B2Gold’s site operations to ensure consistent health and safety standards are established and adhered to. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated and seasoned self-starter with proven track record of safety, health, and/or training related leadership experience
Location
This is a full-time position based at B2Gold Corporate Office in Vancouver, Canada with a flexible work arrangement option available.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee the Corporate occupational health and safety function including establishing Policies and Standards, establishing Directives and Guidance, setting Objectives and Targets, and developing systems and measures that appropriately assess functional performance;
- Ensure critical permits are maintained and complied with by all operations;
Provide input into the development of corporate, regional and site procedures/practices:
- Standardize procedures/practices across the organization as needed;
- Establish and maintain the Corporate Crisis Management Plan and coordinate crisis management exercises;
- Respond to requests and provide guidance and advice across the organization/function;
- Provide expertise, guidance, mentoring, development and advisory services to all sites within B2Gold in all disciplines associated with occupational health and safety management:
- Assist regional and site personnel in implementing occupational health and safety programs;
- Advise and assist site management in the development of hazard control methods and techniques consistent with B2Gold occupational health and safety requirements;
- Oversee the implementation and quality control of competency-based training systems at B2Gold sites;
- Oversee accident investigation process to ensure an effective root cause analysis system is maintained at each operation. Collect data, analyze trends and communicate across the organization the common reasons why accidents are occurring, including overseeing the implementation of corrective actions at all B2Gold sites relating to findings from accident/incident investigations for extreme risk events at any B2Gold site;
- Ensure management system software is utilized effectively at B2Gold operating sites, including training site personnel in its use and approving and implementing software modifications/updates;
- Oversee accident/incident investigations for fatalities and extreme risk events at B2Gold sites;
- Measure, audit and evaluate the occupational health and safety management systems and hazard controls at B2Gold operations for conformance with B2Gold’s occupational health and safety requirements and communicate the results of evaluations to site management and appropriate corporate personnel:
- Oversee the occupational health and safety standards (Management System Standards and Performance Standards) audit program, including communicating results to site management and appropriate corporate personnel;
- Ensure appropriate follow up on issues that arise out of audits, inspections and accident/incident investigations;
- Review regional and site occupational health and safety budgets;
- Oversee the development of the occupational health and safety components of the company’s Sustainability Report;
To build capacity of the Corporation’s occupational health and safety staff:
- Assist as necessary in the search for and recruitment of regional and site occupational health and safety personnel;
- Engage and support as needed the development of B2Gold regional and site occupational health and safety personnel;
To advise the management group on corporate health and safety:
- Produce and deliver monthly occupational health and safety reports on the operational performance of B2Gold sites;
- Report on occupational health and safety performance to the Board of Directors Sustainability Committee;
- Prepare internal and external occupational health and safety reports or components of reports as required;
- Interface as required with stakeholders on occupational health and safety matters;
- Conduct and report on occupational health and safety due diligence on potential acquisitions;
- Review best practices and the competitive landscape and recommend continuous improvement efforts in corporate occupational health and safety;
- Stay current with technological developments, standards, methods and international best practices related to occupational health and safety management; and
- Perform other duties as required in support of Company objectives.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Risk Management, Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment or similar from an accredited university or college required, OR adequate experience and Gold Seal Certification considered in lieu of;
- Minimum 10 years of experience in a safety, health, and training leadership role in a remote mining environment;
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional Designation and Mine Rescue Certification required;
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills with demonstrated experience in technical reporting writing and public presentations;
- Able to work collaboratively in a team environment but also available to work independently with minimum supervision;
- Available to think strategically with a big-picture mindset; and,
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
- Train the Trainer and Supervisor Level II or related certifications considered an asset;
- Experience with challenging jurisdictions considered a strong asset.
Job Demands/Physical Requirements:
- This position is based out of our Vancouver head office with frequent international travels required which may be in short notice (approximately 30% of the time annually)
- Frequent overtime required outside of normal business hours to communicate with worldwide mining project and supplier time zones;
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to: Type, sit at desk, climb stairs, work in cold outdoor or loud environment.

B2Gold offers a competitive compensation package, including a base salary commensurate with the candidate’s experience, knowledge, and skill set, and a comprehensive benefits package for employees and their eligible dependents. The base salary range for this position is CAD $200,000 – 235,000 per annum, which is the anticipated pay at the time of hire but does not reflect similar future job opportunities. Details of the total compensation package will be shared during the interview process.
