The Role
 

BGC is looking for a Health & Safety (H&S) Specialist to support a dynamic group of applied earth science professionals and to create a safe and healthy work environment for all employees and contractors. This is an exciting opportunity to work with an international team of consulting engineers, geoscientists, and safety professionals.  

Reporting to the Head of Health & Safety, the successful candidate will provide their safety expertise and guidance while practicing our values of One Team, Excellence, Curiosity, Common Sense, and Clarity.
 

Responsibilities

  • Support efforts to continually improve H&S performance through review of feedback and key performance indicators, identification of emerging trends, and developing recommendations for improvement to the company-wide H&S Management System.   
  • Update existing and develop new H&S policies, procedures and programs to meet relevant OHS regulations in a range of geographies, including Canada, US, Australia, Chile, and the Dominican Republic, and also to align with client requirements and industry best practices in various sectors, including mining, pipelines, transportation, energy, and communities. 
  • Support project teams in developing and implementing H&S plans with an emphasis on practical solutions for conducting work in a diverse range of environments from cold regions to the tropics, mountains to coastal plains, and urban to remote areas.  
  • Conduct periodic H&S site inspections at project sites to verify implementation of the Health and Safety Management System and to assess its effectiveness. 
  • Lead incident investigations, identify opportunities for improvement, and support implementation of corrective actions to prevent recurrence. 
  • Manage workers compensation claims and develop modified work and return to work programs for injured and ill employees. 
  • Develop and deliver H&S related training courses and presentations to a variety of audiences within the organization. 
  • Liaise with client safety personnel and other industry professionals. 
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate H&S considerations into project planning and execution. 
  • Support project teams and local offices with regulatory compliance, coaching, advice, and mentorship on all H&S-related matters. 
  • Actively participate as a member of the company-wide H&S Team and H&S committee to drive a culture of safety excellence. 
  • Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies related to H&S and apply this knowledge to improve safety performance. 
  • Travel to other BGC offices and field sites as needed (approximately 5-10% of time). 
  • Additional duties as required. 

Required Education, Experience & Competencies 

  • Certificate, diploma, or bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety (or related) field.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation.  
  • 10 to 15+ years of experience. Applicants with fewer or more years of experience than this may also be considered at a seniority level commensurate with their experience.
  • Experience in the mining, pipeline, and construction sector. 
  • Demonstrated experience with ISO 45001, COR and other compliance standards. 
  • Knowledge of Canadian, US, Australia OHS Laws and Regulations. 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SharePoint, and Adobe Acrobat. 
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to travel nationally and internationally for office and field work. 
     

Desired Education, Experience & Competencies 

  • Experience with pipelines, construction, transportation, and consulting engineering in remote areas.
  • Experience with developing H&S policies, procedures and programs to address psychological and psychosocial hazards in the workplace.
  • Ability to speak French or Spanish.
  • Willingness to get acquainted with regulations from Chile and the Dominican Republic.

Position Requirements   

Driver’s License 
BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck.  Upon hiring, BGC will require a driver’s abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.

Travel and Vaccination

The estimated base salary range for this position is $95,000 - $125,000 CAD per annum, however base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. BGC's compensation package also includes a training allowance and a comprehensive medical and dental plan.
