Effective July 1, 2018 the eligibility criteria to apply for the CRSP certification changed.

Applications for the CRSP certification received on or after July 1 2018 are required to have the following:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree (4-year) in any field OR a 2-year diploma (or certificate) in occupational health and safety or a closely related field from a recognized academic institution. 
  • At least four (4) years of experience where occupational health and safety is at least 50%, preventative, professional level with breadth and depth of health and safety duties.

The College of the North Atlantic, Safety Engineering Technology (Post Diploma) program, completed after a 3-year diploma from a recognized college/or a degree form a recognized University. This full-time, classroom, [co-op option] program qualifies for the CRSP eligibility criteria after July 1, 2018. An applicant will be required to submit both transcripts (3-year diploma & post-diploma).       Program is not currenlty being offered.

If you are a previous graduate and completed both the Certificate and Applied Certificate, the two certificates combined meet the 900 hour requirement.

University of Alberta
The University of Alberta is in the process of developing an OHS Professional Diploma, pending full university governance approvals. The University of Alberta OHS certificate program will ladder into the diploma program. Based on the preliminary information provided to the BCRSP, the University of Alberta OHS Professional Diploma program will be offered: part-time; through a combination of online and classroom instruction; and will qualify for the CRSP eligibility criteria after July 1, 2018. As this program is offered in a modular approach, it may be appropriate for students looking to bridge their existing OHS academic qualification to a CRSP eligible qualification. For more information, contact the University of Alberta Faculty of Extension at ohs@ualberta.ca.

The University of Calgary is in the process of developing stackable certificates that upon completion of all, would be eligible for the CRSP certification. University of Fredericton

  • Executive MBA with a speciality stream in Health & Safety Leadership Executive MBA HS Leadership
  • CRSP Pathway CHSEP/SHEM: The University of Fredericton (UFred) has mapped out a CRSP Eligibility Pathway. UFred students who wish to obtain the necessary educational prerequisites for eligibility for the CRSP designation will now be able to combine credits obtained through the Certificate in Health, Safety and Environmental Processes (CHSEP) and the Diploma in Safety, Health and Environmental Management (SHEM). In development are several new modules and courses, including ones specific to fire safety, leadership and communications, allowing the combined programs to reach the 900 hours of required study for the exam. (for courses taken after September 1, 2017). Based on the preliminary information available to the BCRSP, the University of Fredericton CHSEP/SHEM CRSP Pathway Program offered part-time, online, is designed to qualify for the CRSP eligibility criteria after July 1, 2018. As this program is offered in a modular approach, it may be appropriate for students looking to bridge their existing OHS academic qualification to a CRSP eligible qualification. The University of New Brunswick has mapped a CRSP Eligibility Pathway that is a combination of the COHS/DOHS (for courses taken after October 1, 2017). Based on the information available to the BCRSP, the University of New Brunswick COHS/DOHS CRSP Pathway Program offered part-time, online, may qualify for the CRSP eligibility criteria after July 1, 2018. As this program is offered in a modular approach, it may be appropriate for students looking to bridge their existing OHS academic qualification to a CRSP eligible qualification.
